How not to be the unsuccessful story about a successful employee in a successful corporation

One Category of Mutual Fund to Avoid

Give the extra mile and 200% at your job... Just kidding, you were expecting something else for sure. Well here is the complete answer:

  • Get in the process of continuous learning: This one is easy. If you have no degree, get a technical degree, if you have a technical degree, get a bachelor degree, if you have a bachelor degree, get a master degree, if you have a master degree, get another master degree or a Ph.D. Ok, so you are one of those millennials who don't believe in formal education, IT DOESN'T MATTER, learn a new skill, how about cooking, surfing, dancing, painting, typing, artistic writing, programming, juggling, electronics... something that you like. The point here is that studies show that people that are in constant learning (formal or informal) adapt easily to new situations, so if they lose their job, it will be easier for them to find a new one. Also, constant learning stimulates your brain so it will be easier for you to solve any kind of problem in your life. The last point is, by learning new things maybe you will find the passion of your life, something that you love doing and you are very good at it, finding this will make your life happier.
  • Get a life: The previous bullet is included here, don't let your work define you and your life, get into other activities besides your job, e.g. some voluntary work, a reading club, practicing some sport, getting out for a drink with your friends, enjoying some time with your family, anything. Perform these activities with other people different from those at work. This will improve your networking, and your whole life will not come to an end if you lose your job.
  • Do just what you are getting paid for, no more, no less: When you start in a new job, it's interesting how the Human Resources department brainwashes you into believing that if you dedicate all your life and effort to the company, you will become more successful and you will receive a better paycheck... Truth is, this is not the case. Studies show people that change jobs every 2 years maximize their income compared to the one that decides to stay in a single place (check this http://www.forbes.com/sites/cameronkeng/2014/06/22/employees-that-stay-in-companies-longer-than-2-years-get-paid-50-less/), so please have in mind that HR wants to get the most out of you without paying you accordingly, just don't fall for this trap. Also, please have in consideration that when this company has the option of increasing their stock value in a 0.0000000000001% by firing you, they will do it, so the extra effort and sacrifices from your own life don't worth it.
  • Find an activity that generates additional income, does not matter how small it is: you have a job, so your financial stability is at his best... again the truth is that this is not true. By having a job you decided to let your financial stability in the hands of others, so if they decide to fire you, you can do nothing about it. This is where you start working in your side project, this one can be giving a class, selling goods on eBay, repairing tv's, washing bicycles.... you get the idea. This doesn't mean that you want to be an entrepreneur like every other young millionaire that appears on tv, but by doing this you will find activities that you like and also generates you money! and believe me, this is a good thing and it could come in handy, or in an extreme case, your complete support when you get fired (check the statistics, this is more common than you think). A good trick to do this is to get up an hour early to work on your side project in the morning, by doing this you will avoid the excuse of being tired after work.
  • Understand that suddenly, spontaneously, unpredictably, inadvertently you will get fired: don't believe me? check the newspapers, ask your colleagues, check the rising statistic of unemployment, so you better be prepared. Unemployment has arrived, and it´s planning to stay, so don't choose a unique plan, have several choices.
  • Quit now, don´t plan it!: Ok this one sounds a little more extreme, and you might think that I'm crazy, but have you realized that this is what happens when you get fired? By doing this you will know about how much you are capable, and if you survive (99% sure you will) you will lose your fear of not having a stable income. This is where you apply your side business and check the real result. I have actually done this myself and I don't regret it (my side activity was teaching some classes), it made me move from a job that I just hate to an activity that I just love.
Well, this is it. Please check my next entry about how to avoid the rat race and live life in your own terms. Bye.
